Based on official SPC and local guidance, it is indicated for:
Treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections (skin and mucous membranes), including primary and recurrent genital herpes.
Suppressive therapy for frequent or severe recurrent HSV in adults.
Treatment of varicella-zoster virus infections, including chickenpox and shingles (herpes zoster).
Prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients at risk of HSV complications.
How to take
Take orally with water, swallow whole; can be taken with or without food.
Stay well-hydrated during treatment, especially at higher doses
Dose regimens
HSV infection (adult/child >2 /yrs): 200 /mg 5 times daily, ~4-hourly intervals, for 5 days
Suppressive therapy (frequent HSV): Options include 200 /mg 4× daily, or 400 /mg 2× daily, or 200 /mg 3× daily, depending on severity .
Shingles/Varicella: Higher-dose regimens (e.g., acyclovir 800 /mg 5× daily) apply, though tablets cover the 200 /mg strength .
Renal impairment
Dose adjustments needed for low creatinine clearance: e.g., 200 /mg twice daily if CrCl < /10 /mL/min .
Missed dose
Take as soon as remembered, then resume regular schedule; do not double the dose.
Duration
Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
Monitoring and precautions
Use with caution in renal or hepatic impairment; adjust dose accordingly
Possible side effects: nausea, headache, dizziness, confusion, rash .
Generally safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but use only if clearly needed
Storage
Store below 25 /°C, keep out of children’s reach and do not use past expiry
