Uncomplicated sexually transmitted infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis, non resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Haemophilus ducreyi chancroid
MAC/M. avium intracellulare complex prophylaxis and treatment in HIV infected patients (in combination with other agents)
Adults & elderly:
Standard treatment: total course of 1,500 /mg, either as 500 /mg once daily for 3 /days, or 500 /mg on day /1 followed by 250 /mg daily on days /2–5
STDs: a single 1 /g dose (four 250 /mg tablets at once)
MAC prophylaxis: 1,200 /mg once weekly; MAC treatment in HIV: 600 /mg daily with ethambutol (not applicable for simple 250 /mg dosage)
Children (weigh > /45 /kg): 30 /mg/kg total, given as 10 /mg/kg daily for 3 /days or 10 /mg/kg day /1 then 5 /mg/kg days /2–5; max daily 500 /mg; only for > /45 /kg
Administration:
Swallow tablets whole with water (do not crush/chew)
Take at a fixed time each day, with or without food; meals may reduce GI upset
Avoid antacids within two hours before or after dosing
