Testing & Commissioning (T&C): AHU Airflow Test

In the 2026 Malaysian regulatory landscape, the AHU Airflow Test is the mechanical benchmark for compliance with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024. This test verifies that the AHU is delivering the design volume of air ($m^3/h$ or $L/s$) required to satisfy the thermal and latent loads of the building while remaining within the statutory Specific Fan Power (SFP) limit of 1.6 kW/m³/s.

Step 1: Duct Traverse Measurement

We drill small test holes in the main supply duct (typically in a straight run to ensure laminar flow). We then use a Pitot Tube or Hot-Wire Anemometer to take a grid of readings across the duct's cross-section.

Step 2: Velocity-to-Volume Conversion

The average velocity ($V_{avg}$) is multiplied by the cross-sectional area ($A$) of the duct to determine the Total Airflow ($Q$):

$$Q = V_{avg} \times A$$

Step 3: VFD Performance Mapping

We test the airflow at various VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) increments (e.g., 30Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz). This creates a "System Curve" that proves the VFD Integrated Static Pressure Transducer is correctly modulating the fan to save energy during partial loads.
