Co-testing with HPV DNA and Liquid-Based Cytology (LBC) represents a major advancement in cervical cancer screening. Compared to conventional Pap smears, LBC offers higher sensitivity and specificity, providing clearer monolayered smears that reduce the risk of underdiagnosis.
According to studies reviewed by the Malaysia Health Technology Assessment Section (MaHTAS), combining HPV testing with LBC increases detection rates to an impressive 98%, outperforming the 91–94% rate of single testing.Given that false-negative rates for Pap smears have been reported to range from 6% to 50%, accurate identification of abnormal cells is crucial for early intervention and prevention of cervical cancer.
Therefore, it is strongly recommended that healthcare providers advise women aged 30 and above to undergo annual co-testing with HPV and LBC.
