Description

Common Name: Eastern Blue-Tongued Skink

The Tiliqua scincoides scincoides is the most widely distributed and classically recognized of the blue-tongued skink family — a robust, heavy-bodied lizard with short powerful limbs, a broad triangular head, and the species' signature vivid blue tongue, used as a bold defensive display to startle and deter predators.

Easterns display a grey to brown base color with thick, bold dark crossbands running the length of the body, pale cream to white undersides, and orange-yellow blotching along the flanks. Coloration varies noticeably by locality, making each individual subtly unique. Juveniles often show a wider range of color variation than adults.

These are diurnal, terrestrial lizards native to the woodlands, scrublands, grasslands, and semi-arid zones of southern and eastern Australia — highly adaptable animals that have even been recorded thriving in suburban gardens and parks.

Notes

Market Status: The Eastern Blue-Tongued Skink is one of the most established and consistently traded lizard species in the global exotic pet hobby. Long captive-breeding history (dating back to European zoos in the 1880s) means healthy, established bloodlines are available worldwide.

Husbandry: Terrestrial setup with a thermal gradient is recommended — basking spot at ~38–40°C, cool end at ~21–24°C. UVB lighting is strongly advised. Being omnivores, they thrive on a varied diet of insects, snails, mixed greens, fruits, and quality wet dog or cat food as a protein staple.
