In 2026, the Proportional Air Balancing Method remains the most scientifically robust technique for achieving mechanical equilibrium in HVAC systems. Under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA) 2024, "guesswork" in airflow distribution is no longer acceptable for facilities in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. At its core, this method relies on the physics of fluid dynamics: as long as the total air volume changes, the ratio of airflow between branch ducts remains constant—provided the dampers are not moved.
Most HVAC systems are naturally unbalanced due to the "Path of Least Resistance." Air tends to dump into the first available vents, leaving the furthest zones (the "Index" zones) starved.
Ratio Stability: If a branch is currently getting 50% of its design airflow and another is getting 40%, they are "proportionally" related. By locking the dampers in a specific ratio, we can then simply adjust the main fan speed to bring every outlet to 100% of design simultaneously.
The Fan Cube Law Advantage: This method allows us to identify the "Index Circuit"—the most restrictive path. We leave the Index damper 100% open and balance everything else "down" to it. This ensures the fan operates at the lowest possible static pressure, often reducing energy consumption by 30%.

We open all dampers 100% and measure the "as-found" airflow at every terminal using a Digital Air Hood (Balometer). We calculate the percentage of design flow for each outlet.
The outlet with the lowest percentage of design flow is our Index. This is the "weakest link" in the chain and will be our reference point for the entire branch.
Starting from the end of the duct run and moving toward the fan, we adjust the second-to-last outlet to match the percentage of the Index outlet. Once they are equal, they will stay in that ratio even if the total branch flow changes. We repeat this until the entire branch is proportionally balanced to itself.
Once all branches are internally balanced, we balance the branches to each other at the main headers. Finally, we adjust the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) on the AHU to reach the total design volume.
