Nippon Paint Hydro Wood is a premium water-based acrylic polyurethane product specifically formulated for the protection and enhancement of wood surfaces. Designed as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional solvent-based varnishes, it provides a tough, scratch-resistant finish while maintaining the natural grain and beauty of the timber.
It is ideal for interior wooden surfaces such as furniture, doors, trim, and paneling. Because it is water-based, it features a low-odor, low-VOC formula that is safer for indoor air quality and allows for much faster project completion times. With excellent UV resistance and non-yellowing properties, Hydro Wood ensures that your wood features stay vibrant and protected for years.
Paint Type: Water-based Acrylic Polyurethane.
Finishing: Available in High Gloss or Soft Matt.
Drying Time (at 30°C): Touch Dry in 30 minutes; Hard Dry in 2 hours.
Recocoating Interval: Minimum 2–3 hours between coats.
Theoretical Coverage: 10 – 12 m² per litre per coat (depending on wood porosity).
Volume Solids: Approximately 30% – 35%.
Special Features: Low odor, non-yellowing, and excellent water resistance.
Thinning: Hydro Wood is ready to use. If thinning is required for better flow on highly absorbent wood, add a maximum of 5% clean water. Over-thinning will reduce the protective film thickness.
Mixing: Stir gently and thoroughly before use. Avoid vigorous shaking to prevent the formation of air bubbles in the clear film.
Method: Apply using a high-quality synthetic brush or a spray gun. Apply in the direction of the wood grain to ensure an even finish and optimal penetration.
Standard Wood System:
First Coat: 1 coat of Nippon Paint Hydro Wood (thinned 5% acts as a sealer).
Finish: 2–3 coats of Nippon Paint Hydro Wood (undiluted for maximum build).
Stained Wood System:
Stain: 1 coat of Nippon Paint WoodStain (to achieve desired color).
Finish: 2 coats of Nippon Paint Hydro Wood (to seal and provide gloss/matt protection).
Sanding: Sand the wood surface thoroughly along the direction of the grain using #240 or #320 grit sandpaper to remove imperfections and open the pores.
Cleaning: Remove all sanding dust, dirt, and loose particles using a tack cloth or a vacuum. The surface must be completely clean before application.
Moisture Content: Ensure the wood is dry with a moisture content below 12%–15%. Applying over damp wood can cause peeling or clouding.
Contaminant Removal: Wipe the surface with a suitable solvent if the wood is naturally oily (like teak) to ensure proper adhesion of the water-based coating.
Old Coating Removal: If the wood was previously coated with wax or oil-based varnish, it must be stripped or sanded down to the bare wood to ensure the water-based Hydro Wood can bond effectively.
