Nippon Paint 1-Pack PU Timbercoat is a high-performance, polyurethane-based clear wood finish designed to offer superior protection and a professional aesthetic for all types of interior timber. Unlike traditional varnishes, this 1-component (1-pack) formula provides the toughness of polyurethane without the hassle of mixing a hardener, making it an excellent choice for both DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors.
It is specifically engineered to resist scratches, household chemicals, and water, ensuring that wooden surfaces like furniture, cabinets, and paneling maintain their luster over time. With its excellent flow and leveling properties, 1-Pack PU Timbercoat dries to a smooth, hard-wearing film that enhances the natural grain of the wood while providing a durable protective shield.
Binder Type: Polyurethane modified alkyd.
Finishing: Available in High Gloss or Half Gloss.
Drying Time (at 30°C): Touch Dry in 2 hours; Hard Dry in 6 hours.
Recoating Interval: Minimum 8 hours to allow the PU film to stabilize.
Theoretical Coverage: 10 – 12 m² per litre per coat (varies by wood density and porosity).
Volume Solids: Approximately 45% – 50% by volume.
Special Features: Excellent abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and lead/mercury free
Mixing: Stir the contents thoroughly with a clean paddle before use. Avoid shaking the container, as this can introduce air bubbles that may become trapped in the clear finish.
Thinning: Ready for use for most applications. If thinning is required for better flow or spray application, use a maximum of 5% – 10% Nippon Paint 9000 Thinner.
Method: Apply using a high-quality natural bristle brush or conventional spray. For the smoothest finish, apply in the direction of the wood grain and lightly sand between coats using fine-grade sandpaper (Grade #400).
Standard Interior Wood System:
First Coat: 1 coat of 1-Pack PU Timbercoat (thinned 10% to act as a sealer).
Finish: 2 coats of 1-Pack PU Timbercoat (undiluted for maximum build and protection).
Stained Wood System:
Stain: 1 coat of Nippon Paint WoodStain (to achieve the desired timber tone).
Finish: 2 coats of 1-Pack PU Timbercoat (to lock in the color and provide a durable wear layer).
Sanding: Sand the wood surface thoroughly along the grain using #240 or #320 grit sandpaper to remove any rough fibers and ensure a smooth substrate.
Cleaning: All dust, dirt, grease, and wax must be completely removed. Wipe the surface with a tack cloth or a rag dampened with mineral spirits after sanding.
Moisture Content: Ensure the timber is seasoned and dry (moisture content below 12%). High moisture can cause the polyurethane to turn cloudy or peel.
Old Finish Removal: Previously varnished or waxed surfaces should be stripped or sanded down to the bare wood to ensure the new PU coating can bond effectively.
Knot Treatment: For resinous woods, wipe the knots with a suitable solvent to remove excess resin before applying the first coat.
