Nippon Paint EA9 Red Oxide Primer is a high-performance, two-pack amine-adduct cured epoxy primer enriched with iron oxide pigments. It is specifically engineered to provide a robust anti-corrosive foundation for steel surfaces operating in aggressive environments.
Unlike standard alkyd primers, the EA9 series offers superior resistance to water, chemicals, and mechanical abrasion. It is a staple in industrial maintenance, marine environments, and heavy-duty structural steel projects. Its excellent wetting properties and adhesion make it a reliable barrier against rust, ensuring the longevity of the entire coating system even under harsh conditions.
Paint Type: Two-pack Epoxy (Solvent-based)
Finish: Low Gloss
Color: Reddish Brown
Mixing Ratio: 9 parts Base to 1 part Hardener (by volume)
Pot Life: 4 – 6 hours after mixing (at 25°C – 30°C)
8.0 m² per litre (at 50μm DFT)
Drying Time (at 30°C):
Touch Dry: 2 hours
Hard Dry: 16 hours
Recoating Interval: Minimum 16 hours; Maximum 7 days
Shelf Life: Up to 24 months in a tightly sealed container
Solid Content: 40 ± 2% by volume
Mixing: Stir the Base (Part A) thoroughly. Add the Hardener (Part B) and stir until the mixture is completely uniform. Allow an induction time of 10–15 minutes before starting application.
Thinning: Use Nippon SA-65 Thinner.
Airless Spray: Ready for use (or thin up to 5% if necessary).
Brush/Roller: Add 5–10% thinner for better flow and workability.
Application Method: Airless spray is recommended for large areas to ensure uniform film thickness. Brush and roller are suitable for touch-ups or smaller sections.
Cleaning: Clean all tools and spraying equipment immediately after use with Nippon SA-65 Thinner.
For a complete heavy-duty protective system on steel:
Primer (1 Coat): Nippon Paint EA9 Red Oxide Primer.
Intermediate (Optional): Nippon Paint EA9 Finish HB.
Topcoat (2 Coats): Nippon Paint EA4 Finish (for interior) or Nippon Paint PU Recoatable Finish (for exterior/UV resistance).
Steel: For optimum performance, abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1) or SSPC-SP10 is highly recommended.
Manual Cleaning: If blasting is not feasible, mechanical cleaning to St 3 (ISO 8501-1) using power tools is required to remove all loose rust and mill scale.
De-greasing: The surface must be dry and free from oil, grease, and dirt. Solvent wiping is recommended for contaminated areas.
Environmental Conditions: Do not apply if the relative humidity exceeds 85% or if the surface temperature is less than 3°C above the dew point.
