Nippon Paint NIOZ is a premium two-pack, solvent-based ethyl silicate inorganic zinc-rich primer. It is specifically engineered to provide maximum galvanic protection to steel surfaces operating in highly corrosive environments.
With its high metallic zinc content in the dry film, NIOZ acts as a "sacrificial anode," protecting the steel substrate from rust even if the coating is scratched or damaged. It offers exceptional resistance to heat (up to 400°C), chemicals, and mechanical abrasion. It is the industry standard for protecting bridges, offshore structures, storage tanks, and industrial piping where long-term durability is non-negotiable.
Paint Type: Two-pack Inorganic Zinc (Solvent-based)
Finish: Low Gloss
Color: Grey
Mixing Ratio: 18.2 parts Base to 11.8 parts Hardener (by weight)
Pot Life: 8 hours after mixing (at 25°C – 30°C)
Theoretical Coverage: 5.0 m² per litre (at 75μm DFT)
Drying Time (at 30°C):
Touch Dry: 5 – 10 minutes
Hard Dry: 30 minutes
Recoating Interval: Minimum 24 hours (requires humidity for curing)
Solid Content: 63 ± 2% by volume
Shelf Life: 6 months (Base) / 12 months (Hardener) in tightly sealed containers
Mixing: This product contains heavy zinc dust. Stir the Base thoroughly. Gradually add the Hardener (Zinc Powder) while continuing to stir with a mechanical mixer until the mixture is completely homogeneous. Constant agitation is required during application to prevent the zinc from settling.
Thinning: Use Nippon NIOZ Thinner. Thinning is generally not required for airless spray; add up to 5% if necessary.
Conventional Spray: Suitable for smaller areas.
Brush/Roller: Only for touch-ups or stripe coating (small areas).
Cleaning: Clean all tools and spraying equipment immediately with Nippon NIOZ Thinner after use.
For a complete heavy-duty protective system:
Primer (1 Coat): Nippon Paint NIOZ.
Intermediate (1 Coat): Nippon Paint EA9 Finish HB or Nippon Paint 8048 Zinc Phosphate Primer QD (as a mist coat/tie coat).
Topcoat (2 Coats): Nippon Paint PU Recoatable Finish (for UV resistance) or Nippon Paint EA4 Finish (for interior).
Steel: For optimum performance, abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1) or SSPC-SP10 is mandatory. A surface profile of 40–75 microns is required.
Cleanliness: The surface must be completely dry and free from oil, grease, salt, and other contaminants.
Curing Condition: Being an ethyl silicate, this product requires moisture in the air to cure. If the relative humidity is below 50%, the curing process will be significantly delayed.
Mist Coat: When overcoating with epoxy or other finishes, apply a "mist coat" first to prevent pinholing/bubbling caused by air trapped in the porous zinc film.
