Nippon Paint Aqua Epoxy Primer is a high-performance, two-component waterborne modified amine-cured epoxy primer specifically designed for concrete and masonry surfaces. This environmentally friendly primer serves as a superior tie-coat, ensuring excellent adhesion between the substrate and subsequent water-based epoxy topcoats. Formulated with low VOC and minimal odor, it is ideal for use in sensitive indoor environments such as hospitals, schools, pharmaceutical factories, and food preparation areas. It provides excellent abrasion resistance on concrete floors and effectively seals the surface to protect the final finishing coats from alkalinity and moisture.
Paint Type: Water-based (Two-component)
Finishing: Low Sheen / Gloss (as a primer film)
Color: Clear / Light Greyish (depending on specific batch)
Mixing Ratio: 4 parts Base to 1 part Hardener (by volume)
Pot Life: 1 hour at 30°C after mixing
Touch Dry: 1 – 2 hours (depending on temperature and humidity)
Hard Dry: 16 hours
Recoating Interval: Minimum 12 – 16 hours
Theoretical Coverage: 10 m² per litre per coat (at 50 microns DFT)
No. of Coats: 1 coat
Shelf Life: Up to 24 months in a tightly sealed container
Application Method: Apply using a high-quality Brush, Roller, or Conventional Air Spray.
Mixing: Pour the Hardener (Part B) into the Base (Part A). Mix thoroughly for 2–3 minutes using a mechanical stirrer (300–500 rpm) until a completely homogenous mixture is achieved.
Conventional Spray: Thin with 25% – 30% clean water.
Cleaning: Clean all tools and equipment with clean water immediately after use.
Note: Do not apply if the relative humidity exceeds 85% or if the substrate temperature is less than 3°C above the dew point.
Sealer / Primer (1 Coat): Nippon Paint Aqua Epoxy Primer.
Topcoat (2 Coats): Nippon Paint Aqua Epoxy (Water-based epoxy finish).
Note: For specialized wall or floor applications, ensure the intermediate and topcoats are compatible water-based systems to maintain the low-odor benefits.
General Cleaning: Substrate must be structurally sound, dry, clean, and free from oil, grease, dirt, and loose matter.
New Concrete: Must be allowed to cure for at least 28 days. Moisture content should be below 6% (Kett HI-520) and pH level between 7 and 9.
Acid Treatment: For optimal adhesion on smooth concrete, it is recommended to treat the surface with a 5% sulphuric acid solution until effervescence stops, then rinse thoroughly with water and allow to dry.
Mechanical Preparation: Remove concrete laitance and achieve a suitable profile by light grinding or diamond grinding.
Existing Coatings: Remove all unstable, peeling, or powdery paint. For sound existing coatings, abrade the surface with sandpaper to ensure a good mechanical bond.
Repair: Fill all cracks and surface imperfections with a suitable epoxy filler before priming.
