Valtrex is indicated for:
Herpes zoster (shingles) – reduces duration of symptoms and associated neuralgia
Herpes simplex skin and mucous membrane infections (initial and recurrent genital herpes)
Suppressive therapy of recurrent herpes simplex
Reduction of genital herpes transmission when used as suppressive therapy
According to MIMS Malaysia:
Herpes zoster: 1,000 /mg three times daily for 7 days (dose adjustments required for renal impairment)
HSV genital infections:
Recurrent: 500 /mg twice daily (BD) for 3–5 days
Initial: up to 10 days
Suppressive therapy (immunocompetent): 500 /mg once daily (OD)
Reduction of transmission: 500 /mg once daily
Administration: May be taken with or without food; ensure adequate hydration during therapy
