Indications:

Valtrex is indicated for:

• Herpes zoster (shingles) – reduces duration of symptoms and associated neuralgia

• Herpes simplex skin and mucous membrane infections (initial and recurrent genital herpes)

• Suppressive therapy of recurrent herpes simplex

• Reduction of genital herpes transmission when used as suppressive therapy

Instructions:

According to MIMS Malaysia:

• Herpes zoster: 1,000 /mg three times daily for 7 days (dose adjustments required for renal impairment)

• HSV genital infections:

  • Recurrent: 500 /mg twice daily (BD) for 3–5 days

  • Initial: up to 10 days

• Suppressive therapy (immunocompetent): 500 /mg once daily (OD)

• Reduction of transmission: 500 /mg once daily

• Administration: May be taken with or without food; ensure adequate hydration during therapy
