MAC prophylaxis or treatment in HIV patients, usually in combination with other agents—though not commonly used with the 500 /mg dose alone
Administration instructions: Swallow each tablet whole with water; do not chew, break or crush. Best taken at a consistent time each day, with or without food (meals may help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort)
Typical adult dosage:
As part of a standard 1,500 /mg total course: 500 /mg once daily for 3 days—or alternatively, 500 /mg on day /1 followed by 250 /mg daily on days /2–5 (note: with 500 /mg tablets you may modify accordingly)
For STDs (e.g. chlamydia, gonorrhoea): single 1 /g dose (two 500 /mg tablets at once)
Precautions and monitoring: Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment (GFR /< /10 /mL/min) or significant liver disease; may need dosage adjustments. Monitor for QT prolongation in those with cardiac risk factors
Warnings: Avoid consuming alcohol during treatment due to potential enhanced side effects such as dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision and headache
Pregnancy & lactation: May be considered during pregnancy (animal studies show no fetal risk, though human data are limited); not advised during breastfeeding as the drug is excreted in breast milk
