Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a Salt Spray Test (SST) Chamber training conducted by Mr. William. It was a valuable technical session that enhanced our understanding of corrosion testing and proper chamber operation.
Salt spray testing is widely used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of materials and surface coatings by simulating harsh marine or industrial environments. It is commonly applied for:
• metal components
• coated parts (paint, plating, galvanizing)
• automotive parts
• fasteners and hardware
• construction materials
⚙️ What we learned during the training
The training covered the key technical aspects of operating and controlling the SST chamber, such as:
✅ Working Principle
The chamber atomizes a salt solution (typically NaCl) into a fine mist/fog to create a corrosive environment inside the chamber.
✅ Critical Test Parameters
We learned how to control and monitor:
• chamber temperature (commonly around 35°C)
• salt concentration & solution preparation
• spray pressure and atomization consistency
• pH level of the solution
• fog collection rate (to ensure correct spray output)
✅ Why monitoring is important
Small deviations in pH, concentration, or spray rate can significantly affect test results, which is why proper setup and routine verification are essential for reliable corrosion evaluation.
Overall, the session gave us better technical confidence in ensuring SST testing is conducted according to standard practice and customer requirements.
Special thanks to Mr. William for the detailed explanation and hands-on guidance throughout the training. Truly appreciated.
