This article is adapted from a Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM) research project conducted by Chee Foong Kim under the Therapeutic Massage and Care programme (NOSS MP-082-4:2012). The study was supervised by Mr. Low Chee Kiat and completed in March 2026.
This study was conducted at Tim Bodycare Training Centre, Petaling Jaya, which served as the penyelaras by providing structured treatment protocols, professional supervision, and a controlled clinical environment. The centre ensured that all massage and aromatherapy interventions were performed according to NOSS standards, emphasizing safety, consistency, and real-world therapeutic application.
Sleep disturbances such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, and poor sleep quality are increasingly common in modern lifestyles and can negatively affect both physical and emotional well-being. This study evaluates the effectiveness of therapeutic massage combined with aromatherapy in improving sleep quality and reducing stress levels.
Using a pre-test and post-test design, 30 participants underwent six structured therapy sessions incorporating massage techniques and calming essential oils such as lavender and chamomile. The results showed consistent improvements in sleep quality, relaxation levels, and stress reduction. The findings support therapeutic massage with aromatherapy as an effective, non-invasive, and holistic approach to managing sleep-related problems.
Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining overall health, supporting physical recovery, emotional stability, and cognitive performance. During sleep, the body undergoes essential processes such as tissue repair, hormone regulation, immune strengthening, and neurological recovery. However, modern lifestyles have significantly disrupted healthy sleep patterns.
As described in the introduction (page 1–2), common sleep problems include difficulty falling asleep, frequent night awakenings, and non-restorative sleep. These issues are often linked to stress, anxiety, prolonged screen time, irregular routines, and persistent muscle tension. Chronic stress, in particular, activates the sympathetic nervous system, preventing the body from entering a relaxed state necessary for deep sleep.
Therapeutic massage offers a natural way to counter these effects by promoting relaxation, reducing muscle tension, and stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. When combined with aromatherapy, the benefits are further enhanced. Essential oils such as lavender and chamomile act on the limbic system, helping regulate emotions and induce calmness, which supports better sleep quality.
This study used a quantitative pre-test and post-test design involving 30 participants experiencing sleep-related issues and muscle tension. Participants were selected based on specific criteria, including moderate pain levels and discomfort in the neck, shoulder, and upper back regions.
Each participant underwent six sessions of therapeutic massage combined with aromatherapy over a structured treatment period. According to the research procedure (page 9–11), the study followed a clear sequence:
Massage techniques included effleurage, petrissage, and myofascial release, with a focus on tension areas such as the trapezius and neck. Aromatherapy was applied using lavender and chamomile oils, both topically and through inhalation, enhancing relaxation effects.
The results show strong and consistent improvements in both physical and sleep-related outcomes.
VAS scores (page 16–17) show a clear decrease from moderate levels (5–8) at baseline to minimal levels (0–3) after treatment. Some participants achieved complete relief by the final session, indicating strong effectiveness of repeated therapy.
The thematic analysis (page 21–22) highlights significant improvements across key sleep indicators:
This shows that participants not only slept better but also experienced deeper and more consistent rest.
Relaxation levels increased steadily across all sessions. As seen in the thematic chart on page 22, participants reported feeling significantly calmer after treatments, which directly contributed to improved sleep patterns.
According to the injury distribution (page 20):
These areas are closely linked to stress and poor sleep, reinforcing the relevance of the treatment approach.
The findings confirm that sleep problems are strongly connected to both physical tension and psychological stress. Muscle tightness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back contributes to discomfort, which interferes with the body’s ability to relax and fall asleep.
Therapeutic massage addresses this by releasing muscle tension, improving circulation, and activating the body’s relaxation response. Aromatherapy enhances this effect by influencing the brain’s emotional and sleep-regulating centers. Together, they create a powerful combined therapy.
An important observation is the cumulative effect of treatment. While initial sessions provided relief, the most significant improvements appeared after multiple sessions, showing that consistency is key for long-term results.
The study also highlights the link between physical recovery and psychological confidence. As participants experienced less pain and better sleep, their overall well-being and daily functioning improved.
This study demonstrates that therapeutic massage combined with aromatherapy is an effective and holistic approach to managing sleep problems. The treatment not only reduces muscle tension and stress but also significantly improves sleep quality and overall well-being.
As a non-invasive and drug-free intervention, it offers a safe alternative for individuals seeking natural solutions for sleep disturbances. When combined with consistent sessions and proper lifestyle habits, it can play a key role in long-term health and recovery.
