SINGAPORE (April 14): Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) highlighted continued strong investment inflows from Singapore into Johor, reinforcing the southern state’s position as a key gateway for cross-border business expansion.
Mida director Vinothan Tulisinathzan said that major sectors attracting Singaporean investors include the digital economy, semiconductor industry and food and beverage (F&B) businesses. These sectors are benefiting from Johor’s strategic proximity, cost advantages and improving infrastructure ecosystem.
In the digital economy segment, investment opportunities are broadly divided into digital technology providers—such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI)—and digital infrastructure providers. Notably, Johor has gained significant traction in attracting data centre investments, driven by rising demand for AI-ready, energy-efficient infrastructure.
Vinothan noted that authorities are becoming more selective in approving data centre projects, prioritising sustainability and higher-value technological capabilities to ensure long-term economic benefits.
Beyond digital infrastructure, Johor is also seeing increased participation from Singapore-based semiconductor companies, spanning both front-end and back-end operations. Many of these firms are part of the global supply chain ecosystem, including Tier 1 and Tier 2 players seeking to optimise costs while maintaining regional connectivity.
The F&B sector is another key growth area, as Singapore-based operators look to Johor Bahru for expansion amid rising operational costs at home. Some companies are establishing central kitchens in Johor Bahru, leveraging halal-certified operations to enhance their competitiveness in regional and Middle Eastern export markets.
These insights were shared during a roundtable discussion titled “How Johor and Singapore are reshaping cross-border investment,” organised by the Singapore Press Club and the Johor Economic, Tourism and Cultural Office Singapore.
Also present at the session were Azfar Mohamad Mustafar and Hasni Mohammad, underscoring the importance of bilateral cooperation in strengthening the Johor-Singapore economic corridor.
