Bukit Kayu Hitam ICD Boosts Malaysia–Thailand Trade

The Bukit Kayu Hitam Inland Container Depot (ICD) is becoming an important logistics hub in northern Malaysia. It helps improve trade between Malaysia and Thailand.

The ICD is located at the Bukit Kayu Hitam–Sadao border, a key connection point between the two countries. It is also linked to Malaysia’s North-South Expressway and Thailand’s highway network. This makes it easier to move goods between southern Thailand, northern Malaysia, and global markets through Penang Port.

Supporting Growing Trade

Trade between Malaysia and Thailand is increasing. The ICD helps make cross-border transport faster and smoother.

By working with Penang Port, the ICD brings port services closer to businesses. This reduces travel time, lowers congestion at seaports, and improves supply chain efficiency.

A Complete Logistics Hub

The ICD is more than just a storage area. It offers many services in one place, including:

  • Container handling and storage
  • Cargo consolidation and distribution
  • Cross-border cargo transfer
  • Container inspection and management

It also operates in a free commercial zone, allowing flexible handling of both large and small shipments.

Solving Border Challenges

At the Malaysia–Thailand border, trucks from each country cannot travel far into the other country. So, goods must be transferred between trucks.

The ICD makes this process easier by providing a proper space for cargo transfer. This reduces delays, improves safety, and speeds up operations.

New Access Road

A special access road is being planned to connect the ICD directly to the border checkpoint.

This will:

  • Reduce traffic congestion
  • Shorten waiting times
  • Improve delivery speed

A dedicated customs facility will also help speed up clearance processes.

Digital Systems Improve Efficiency

The ICD uses modern digital systems, such as:

  • e-CAS: allows truck drivers to book arrival times in advance
  • TOS: manages container handling and yard operations

These systems reduce waiting time, improve tracking, and increase productivity.

Expanding Capacity

The ICD is upgrading its equipment and systems to handle more cargo. This is important for industries that need fast and reliable delivery.

Safety and Quality Standards

The ICD follows strict safety and quality rules:

  • Controls truck weight limits
  • Uses secure access and surveillance systems
  • Follows ISO 9001 standards for quality management

Future Development: Blackwood Complex

In the future, the ICD will expand with the Blackwood Complex. This new facility will include:

  • Food and retail outlets
  • Truck drivers’ lounge with showers
  • Office spaces
  • Training and education centres

This will create a better working environment for logistics workers.

Strengthening Regional Trade

With its strong location and modern facilities, the ICD will become a key hub for trade in ASEAN. It helps businesses manage supply chains more efficiently across countries.

A Modern Logistics Gateway

The Bukit Kayu Hitam ICD represents a new approach to logistics in Southeast Asia. It combines infrastructure, technology, and smart planning to improve cross-border trade.

It is set to become Malaysia’s northern gateway, supporting faster, safer, and more reliable cargo movement in the future.

Recognition

The ICD is the first inland port in Malaysia to receive the Gold GreenRE Certification, and it is recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records.
