Lembah Kiara Park Reopens After RM6.5 Million Infrastructure Upgrade

KUALA LUMPUR (June 3) — Lembah Kiara Park has officially reopened to the public following the completion of a RM6.5 million upgrading project focused primarily on improving the park's infrastructure, drainage systems and environmental management facilities.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, said the recreational park, which is located within Bukit Kiara Federal Park, is managed by the National Landscape Department (JLN) rather than Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

According to Yeoh, only RM700,000 of the total allocation was spent on landscaping improvements, including repairs to pedestrian walkways, gazebos and other visitor facilities. The majority of the funding was directed towards essential infrastructure enhancements.

A total of RM2.5 million was allocated for upgrading the park's electrical system. The works included replacing feeder pillars, installing new underground cables and replacing 233 damaged lamp posts to improve safety and functionality throughout the park.

Meanwhile, RM3.3 million was used to rehabilitate the park's water management infrastructure. This included restoration works on the upstream pond, sediment basin, streams and the main retention pond. Additional measures such as desilting works, construction of two eco-walls and the installation of maintenance facilities were also carried out to improve long-term pond management and reduce future maintenance costs.

The park is now open daily from 5.30am to 8pm. The completed project remains under a one-year defects liability period until April next year, during which JLN and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) will continue monitoring the upgraded facilities.

Yeoh also thanked government agencies and local community representatives from Kampung Sungai Penchala and Taman Tun Dr Ismail for their support, noting that the upgrading works fulfilled a long-standing expectation among residents.

What We Learned

The Lembah Kiara Park upgrading project demonstrates that major investments in public recreational spaces often extend beyond visible landscaping improvements. Of the RM6.5 million spent, nearly 90% was allocated to critical infrastructure such as drainage systems, retention ponds and electrical facilities, highlighting the importance of maintaining essential park infrastructure to ensure visitor safety, environmental sustainability and long-term operational efficiency. The project also reflects the government's commitment to enhancing urban green spaces while preserving their ecological functions for surrounding communities.
