If you've ever wondered whether you're bathing your dog too often — or not enough — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we hear at Season Pet Shop in Kepong. The honest answer: there's no single magic number that fits every dog. But Malaysia's warm, humid climate does change the picture, so let's break it down.
There isn't an official, fixed “every X weeks” rule for grooming. The American Kennel Club notes that the right frequency depends mostly on your dog's coat type, lifestyle and environment rather than a strict calendar. A short-coated dog that mostly stays indoors has very different needs from a fluffy double-coated breed that loves rolling in the grass.
One thing worth remembering: bathing too often can strip your dog's natural skin oils, which may lead to dry, irritated skin. More baths isn't automatically better.
Our hot and humid weather adds a layer to consider. Warm, damp conditions can raise the risk of skin issues such as hot spots and fungal problems. In this kind of climate, regular brushing, keeping the coat dry, cleaning the paws and removing mats all help your dog stay comfortable and healthy.
For double-coated breeds (think Pomeranians, Huskies, Golden Retrievers), the priority is frequent brushing to clear out the loose undercoat — and generally fewer full baths, not more.
Taking Malaysia's humidity into account, we generally suggest a grooming visit roughly once a week for most dogs to keep the coat and skin in good shape. Treat this as a starting point, not a hard rule — your dog's coat type and lifestyle still matter, and we're happy to tailor a routine when we see your dog in person.
We also offer grooming packages — message us on WhatsApp to ask what suits your dog.
For dogs prone to itchy or sensitive skin in our climate, a natural herbal (Ayurvedic-style) bath can be a nice add-on. Herbal ingredients such as neem are often described as having soothing, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial qualities that may help calm irritated skin and reduce odour. We position it as a gentle, natural option for humid-weather skin care rather than a medical treatment. If your dog has a persistent skin problem, please consult your vet first.
Your dog is in good hands. Our grooming is handled by a certified, award-winning team (with qualifications and competition awards from bodies such as MKA and Taiwan's KCT), so your pet gets careful, skilled attention every visit.
