Walk down the cat litter aisle and the choices can feel overwhelming — clay, crystal, tofu, scented, clumping, flushable. At Season Pet Shop in Kepong, this is one of the most common questions cat parents ask us. Here's a clear, no-nonsense rundown of the three main types so you can choose what fits your cat and your home.
Clay litter is the long-time favourite for good reason: it clumps firmly, controls odour well, and it's usually the most affordable option. The trade-off is that it tends to be heavier, can produce more dust, and gets tracked around the house more easily. A solid all-rounder if budget is your priority.
Crystal litter is highly absorbent and very good at locking in moisture and odour. It generally doesn't clump, and for a single cat a batch can often last around a month. The downside is a higher price per pack. Great if you want low-maintenance odour control and don't mind paying a bit more.
Tofu litter is made from plant-based material, and it ticks a lot of boxes for Malaysian homes: it clumps, it's often low-dust, it's eco-friendly, and it has a more natural smell. For many cat owners here, it's the most convenient and pleasant option.
Our top recommendation is Nottibee tofu litter, which is built for super odour control — a real plus in our warm climate and in smaller apartments where smells linger. Because tofu litter is plant-based and flushable, it's especially handy if you live in a flat or condo: you can simply flush the clumps down the toilet instead of bagging them up.
If you have a kitten, or a cat that tends to nibble on its litter, be careful with clumping clay and clumping silica litters — if swallowed, these can expand inside the body and cause problems. For these cats, a tofu litter is generally the safer choice. When in doubt, please check with your vet.
We stock all three types — clay, crystal and tofu — so you can compare and find the right fit for your cat. Not sure where to start? Message us and we'll point you in the right direction.
