PROTON Records Strong Growth in May 2026 as Saga Reclaims Top Spot

National carmaker PROTON continued its impressive performance in 2026, recording 16,995 vehicle sales in May, representing a 38% increase compared to the same period last year. The strong result further strengthens the brand's position in the Malaysian automotive market despite a softer overall industry performance.

For the first five months of the year, PROTON delivered 84,294 vehicles, achieving an estimated 26.7% market share. The achievement highlights the company's growing appeal across traditional internal combustion engine (ICE), electric vehicle (EV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) segments.

One of the biggest highlights was the return of the Proton Saga as Malaysia's best-selling vehicle. The popular sedan recorded 7,398 units sold in May, bringing its year-to-date total to 37,375 units. The model continues to attract buyers with its affordability, reliability, and practicality, making it a favourite among Malaysian motorists.

Meanwhile, the Proton X50 maintained its dominance in the SUV segment, with 2,793 units delivered in May and a cumulative total of 12,967 units for the year so far. The strong demand reflects the model's continued popularity among SUV buyers.

PROTON's electrified vehicle lineup also posted impressive results. The Proton e.MAS range recorded 3,022 deliveries in May, further strengthening the brand's leadership in Malaysia's growing EV and PHEV market.

Leading the electrified lineup was the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, which became the country's best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle. The model achieved 1,181 units sold in May, bringing total sales to 2,936 units since its launch earlier this year.

The Proton e.MAS 7 EV also enjoyed a strong month, reclaiming its position as Malaysia's best-selling electric vehicle with 958 units delivered in May. The result reflects increasing customer confidence in PROTON's electric mobility offerings.

Looking ahead, PROTON is preparing to further expand its EV production capabilities. Local assembly (CKD) operations for the Proton e.MAS 5 are scheduled to begin this month, a move expected to improve vehicle supply and support rising demand from Malaysian consumers.

With strong sales across multiple segments and growing momentum in the electrified vehicle market, PROTON appears well-positioned to maintain its growth trajectory throughout the remainder of 2026.
