Malaysia Now Has 6,416 EV Chargers, Government Targets 30,000 by 2030

Malaysia has reached a total of 6,416 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points nationwide as of May 31, 2026, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The network consists of 2,143 DC fast chargers and 4,273 AC chargers.

MITI said the government is taking further steps to expand the country's EV charging infrastructure to meet growing demand. Among the initiatives introduced is the implementation of PLANMalaysia's EV Charging Bay Guidelines, which have shortened the approval process for new charging stations to as little as 14 working days.

The ministry added that efforts are being strengthened through close collaboration with local authorities, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), charging point operators, the EV Charging Industry Association, and the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association.

Malaysia previously aimed to install 10,000 public EV chargers by the end of 2025, but recorded 5,624 charging points by December 31, 2025, with 1,923 units (34%) being DC fast chargers.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin said the government is continuing to improve policies and incentives to accelerate the growth of the EV ecosystem, with a strong focus on expanding charging infrastructure nationwide.

Malaysia's long-term goal is to have 30,000 public EV charging points by 2030. Sim acknowledged that charging availability remains a challenge and said the government is working closely with TNB and industry stakeholders to build more electrical substations, ensuring sufficient power supply to support future EV charging facilities.
