3Wire RS2M2 is a dual-master isolated RS-485 hub that allows two RS-485 master devices to communicate with one or more RS-485 slave devices without cross-interference.
It ensures that slave responses are returned only to the corresponding master that initiated the request. This helps improve communication control where PLCs, SCADA systems, EMS platforms, gateways or monitoring systems need shared access to the same RS-485 slave network.
Normal RS-485 networks are usually designed around one master polling multiple slaves. Problems occur when a second master is connected directly to the same bus. RS2M2 provides a cleaner approach by managing the two-master communication path and reducing the risk of response conflict.
It is useful where the same RS-485 slave network must be shared between control, monitoring, automation, metering or supervisory systems. Typical examples include a PLC and an energy monitoring gateway, a SCADA system and a service tool, or an existing EMS and IoTWatt 4.0 gateway.
RS2M2 is best positioned as an industrial dual-master RS-485 sharing hub for retrofit projects where two systems need controlled access to the same Modbus or RS-485 slave devices.
RS2M2 manages communication between two master devices and the shared RS-485 slave network, helping ensure slave replies are returned only to the requesting master.
Allows two RS-485 master devices to communicate with one or more shared slave devices.
Slave responses are directed only to the master that initiated the request.
The slave communication port supports up to 175 RS-485 slave nodes, subject to network conditions.
Provides isolation between communication and power, and between master and slave interfaces.
Protects communication interfaces from electrostatic discharge in industrial environments.
Provides surge protection for more reliable operation in harsh electrical environments.
Each communication port can be configured independently for baud rate and communication format.
Built with a 32-bit microcontroller and high-speed optocouplers, supporting baud rates up to 115,200 bps.
Supports DC 9-30V input with built-in overcurrent and reverse polarity protection.
RS2M2 includes three RS-485 communication interfaces for controlled dual-master access to a shared slave network.

RS2M2 is intended for controlled dual-master RS-485 sharing. Confirm polling timing, master priority, slave response time, baud rate, parity and protocol behaviour before deployment.
Connect VCC to the positive terminal of the DC 9-30V power supply and GND to the negative terminal. Minimum current should be at least 100mA.
Connect terminal A to the RS-485 A line, terminal B to the RS-485 B line, and GND to signal ground where required.
The SET terminal / button is used for configuration setting as part of the RS2M2 interface arrangement.
The supply voltage should remain within the specified DC 9-30V range and must not exceed 35V.
Allow PLCs, controllers and monitoring systems to access RS-485 slave devices with better communication separation.
Share RS-485 digital power meters between automation systems and energy monitoring platforms.
Allow IoTWatt gateway devices to access existing RS-485 meters without removing the current master system.
Useful where supervisory systems need shared access to existing Modbus slave networks.
Suitable for RS-485 based alarm systems, access control networks and site monitoring systems.
Supports RS-485 communication sharing for remote monitoring and control applications.
RS2M2 is useful in IoTWatt 4.0 Digital Energy Audit and Energy Intelligence retrofit projects where existing RS-485 power meters are already connected to a customer SCADA, BMS, EMS or monitoring system. It allows a second master or gateway to access the same slave network in a more controlled manner.
| IoTWatt 4.0 Use | How RS2M2 Supports It |
|---|---|
| Retrofit Meter Access | Allows IoTWatt gateway devices to access existing RS-485 meters without disconnecting the original master system. |
| SCADA / EMS Coexistence | Supports shared access where both existing systems and IoTWatt 4.0 need meter data. |
| Reduced Rewiring | Helps avoid duplicate CT / meter installation when existing RS-485 meters can be reused. |
| Communication Protection | Provides isolation and protection for RS-485 communication lines used in energy monitoring. |
| Energy Audit Data | Supports access to meter data for dashboards, load profiling, EECA reporting and digital energy audit evidence. |
