Penang’s Pila Project to Boost Northern Region Logistics and Industrial Growth

GEORGE TOWN (April 14): Penang is advancing the development of the Penang International Logistics Aeropark (Pila), with earthworks and soil treatment currently underway as part of the project’s early-stage implementation.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow confirmed that planning approval for the project’s master plan has been secured, enabling construction to proceed according to schedule. The first phase—comprising a free commercial zone-class air cargo warehouse—is targeted for completion and operations by 2029.

Once fully developed, Pila is projected to handle up to 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually by 2050, supported by more than two million square feet of warehouse space. The initial phase alone is expected to contribute an additional 100,000 tonnes of cargo capacity per year.

The project is a strategic joint venture between Penang Development Corporation and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, aimed at developing a new cargo terminal that will strengthen the logistics ecosystem in the Northern Region.

Located near the Penang International Airport, Pila is designed to support the growing needs of high-value industries, particularly the semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E&E) sectors—both key drivers of Penang’s industrial economy.

The initiative aligns with broader development frameworks such as Penang Vision 2030 and the State Structure Plan 2030, as well as ongoing airport expansion plans to enhance regional connectivity and trade capacity.

Chow added that the project has already secured rental commitments from both international and local logistics players, reflecting strong market confidence. The official launch ceremony is currently being planned and is expected to be officiated by Anwar Ibrahim.
